Thanks to @lifewithcocoa, @venntastic, @mostatnoon and Lindsay for joining me on our 2nd Annual Donut Crawl! We had new contenders this year and we made sure to use our trusty Donut Score Card to guide us, updated from @oiseauloco‘s creation last year.
STOP #1 – EMMA’S COUNTRY KITCHEN
We started our crawl at Emma’s Country Kitchen with full brunch (details on a later blog post). Let it be known that donuts go very fast here, so we made sure to order the donuts before they sold out!
The base donut underneath all the toppings was not too oily and not too dry. It was overall a good bite, and very fresh tasting.
Peach Ginger Glaze Donut – The Peach flavour was nice but we weren’t fans of the ginger glaze. The flavour concentration wasn’t even around the donut so sometimes you got too much peach or ginger in a bite. You feel like you’re always missing something from one bite to the next.
The Lemon Raspberry Donut – We could have done without the dried/candied lemon on top. The Raspberry frosting by itself would have put me in a Homer Simpson coma but the lemon taste was just too zingy for the already sweet donut.
We all agreed that the Rocky Road was our favourite. You feel like you finally know what real chocolate tastes like, and it doesn’t taste like SUGARSUGARSUGAR. They found a way to make rocky road without the need to be hyper sweet! THANK YOU, EMMA!
STOP #2 DELICA KITCHEN (PAULETTE’S )
They had quite a selection of donuts and Benny could NOT contain himself.
These donuts were a little more on the cake-y side – not something you would want stand alone. Really the donut base here is more a vehicle for their awesome flavour combinations on top.
Oreo Donut – We were expecting more chocolate flavour from the cookie bits and unfortunately most of the cookie pieces would fall off the top of your donut leaving you with sadness.
Maple Sugar – the lady at the counter told us it was maple sugar but all we tasted was sugar. This is the donut where you really taste the base donut without the crazy toppings. Sadly, it just isn’t exciting enough on it’s own.
Mango Pistachio with Yogurt Frosting Drizzle – Hello, Mango! We were very happy with this donut. The mango flavour is strong but not over powering. The roasted pistachios and yogurt drizzle just balanced out the fruity sweetness. The only issue I had with this is that you miss out on the pistachio flavour sometimes because the crushed pistachios aren’t always evenly distributed around the donut
Candied Apple Donut – Eat this donut and you’re transported to the carnival. Good crunch on the donut and you get that caramel apple flavour without the sticky awkward eating of the original.
STOP #3 TBC VEGAN
Our next stop was at Lansdowne Station for Through Being Cool Vegan Bakery! Yes I said it Vegan!
They had over 10-15 donut varities for the weekend, and at 1 PM these were all that were left and we soon found out why!
You don’t miss the eggs and milk at all, it’s like you never needed them -blasphemy I know! The most remarkable thing about these donuts was the texture of the base donut – a classic donut texture, just a little chewier.
Here were our donut choices for this stop:
Mojito – I wanted this one to work, I really did, but the mojito frosting just didn’t do it. The mojito flavour would get concentrated on parts of the donut meaning you got too much flavour on some bites, and not enough on others. Good idea but I think it needs more work
Coconut – I wished the coconut topping was more toasted. Even though the donut was loaded with coconut, weren’t getting enough of the flavour come through. You actually tasted more of the icing then the shredded coconut on top.
Espresso – We’re so glad we managed to snag the last one because our lives have all been made better by having this donut! The espresso bean flavour really comes through, like the frosting could have been fresh roasted this morning. For my Canadian readers, this donut tasted like a Coffee Crisp.
Linds’ first reaction says it all “This is not a Tim Horton’s donut”. She is my chocolate barometer, and if she says this is good, then it’s a winner. Again the biggest problem you have with this donut is that the brownie bits tend to fall off the donut, especially if you’re sharing. Luckily the donut underneath is just so good, you don’t mind if you lose a few toppings on the way to your mouth.
STOP #4 VON DOUGHNUTS
Our last and final stop would be Von Doughnuts on the Danforth. On our way over here we were so full from the last three places, we said “We’ll split 1 donut 5 ways OK?”
We ended up getting 6 donuts in total, they were all so pretty with such interesting flavour combinations we couldn’t resist.
Cap ‘N Jack – this donut started off with my favourite childhood food – Sugary Cereal (Captain Crunch!). But for some reason the cereal just didn’t mesh well with the donut. They spiced the icing with Jack Daniels, which doesn’t quite come through in the flavour. My dream donut would be if Von could turn the icing part to taste like milk after the cereal has dissolved in it! Can you make that happen!?
Peanut Butter Jelly Donut – I loved the flavour combination of this donut. I mean look how excited I am to eat it.
The biggest problem for me was that the donut wasn’t filled. The PB&J part was all in the pretty topping. Hopefully next time I come in, some of that PB&J goodness will make it’s way inside the donut.
Dill Pickle Donut – The most interesting flavour combination on a donut I’ve had to date! This donut was more on the cake-y side, with a mild dill pickle flavoured frosting. Topped with, you guessed it, a deep fried pickle. Wow. Dill Pickle Lovers, you’ll be in heaven after this donut!
Pucker Up Sucker
Meyer Lemon glaze and custard with a pretty little meringue on top. What made this donut truly amazing was that they didn’t just fill the middle with lemon custard. They added the filling sandwich style which meant you got lemony goodness in every bite!
SO WHO CAME OUT ON TOP?
It was a tough decision but when the scores came in …
Von Doughnuts was the place to beat! Their original flavours wowed us! And their donuts are just so perfectly made. Also special congrats to Through Being Cool Vegan Bakery, a close second! I don’t care if you’re done being cool, you made vegan food taste good, and that is cool in my books!
Thanks again to everyone for participating in Donut Crawl 2014! I now need to go nap off this sugar high!
Til, next crawl 🙂
