National Doughnut Day has come and gone. Celebrated the first Friday in June, it brings many bakeries, coffee shops, artisans and stomachs together for one lovely day of dough and sprinkles.
This year we started our celebration by grabbing a free Krispy Kreme donut from their McCaul location. And we weren’t the only ones with this brilliant idea.
The wait wasn’t too long and I was rewarded with a sweet treat:
There really is no other place that gives you Krispy Kreme classic taste. It’s highly sugary and lighter than air. This quality is what makes it possible to eat a dozen in a sitting, and why I avoid them at all costs! They’ve got some interesting options on the menu (like brownie donuts) that would be great to try on a future visit.
We also made a stop at Sam James Coffee Bar in the Path just at St. Andrew’s station. And while they do serve a superior and pretty coffee…
…our journey here was for an entirely different purpose:
A recap of all three flavours we tried:
While its definitely better than any other honey crueller we’ve had, the cardamom crueller she makes is even better. If you manage to get your hands on one you’ll be in heaven in 1 bite. The cardamom flavour is the missing ingredient that will take the crueller to the top of your donut favourites (if it isn’t there already!)
This donut had a more milk chocolate frosting that you could tell was made from scratch. My only knock on this donut is that it could have had more of that custard filling. I like my bostons to be bursting with filling!
Brown Butter Glazed Donut
My absolute favourite. The frosting is a perfect marriage between brown sugar and butter. The donut underneath is the perfect glazed understatement. It was my favourite of the day and a welcome surprise, and it didn’t even have sprinkles!
Thank you Dough by Rachelle, Sam James Coffee Bar and Krispy Kreme for making my Donut Day 2014 a success!
And we’re not done! Tomorrow we’re doing Donut Crawl 2014 and we’re hitting up all new stops on our traipse through Toronto’s finest donut artisans! Make sure to follow the twitter, like the facebook and love me on instagram if you don’t want to miss out on Donut Crawl 2014’s tasty updates!
