Thanks to a posting on Food Bloggers of Canada I got to RSVP to an awesome event last night hosted by Chef Michael Smith and Canadian Lentils. Their new web series Lentil Hunter has Chef Smith searching the globe for the tastiest lentils recipes.
The event had us hopping around the globe like Chef Smith with a passport and *bonus!* a lovely glass of wine!
Where did we go and what did we eat?
First up India’s Gujarati Thali with Lentil & Basmati. Can lentils be creamy? Because these were. Made with Canadian split red lentils, tomatoes and lots of spices
Next up was Morroco. Often lentils are served with table bread at the start of a meal, an easy and different alternative to hummus appetizers.
Italy was next with the Umbrian Lentils & Sausage. The heartiest of the bunch, this would be an awesome meal with a little vino. We learned at this event that Italians like their lentils a little al dente!
And my all time favourite was Dubai’s lentil fritters! Wowza these were good. I think the DIY girls will be trying this recipe out very very soon!
The finish came from France, in the form of soufflé. As the Whovians say A soufflé isn’t a soufflé; a soufflé is a recipe. And this recipe was very very good! Served with a little vanilla ice cream and Star Anise to give it just a hint of a liquorice flavour! Parfait!
Thank you to Chef Michael Smith for opening my eyes to the world of lentils! His passion and enthusiasm for local food is so infectious that I have already started raving about lentils to the point where people’s eyes start to glaze over! Seriously an awesome event with a great Chef!
Stay Tuned for when we try out these lentil fritters for DIY Thursday. And make sure to watch the Lentil Hunter videos! They’re short and sweet and come with the recipe to all of these great dishes!
