If you’ve been living under a rock, you’ve probably missed the ramen craze that has been sweeping Toronto in the last few years. Considering our last winter was extra extra cold, I’m not surprised that Torontonians have embraced the ramen trend with open arms – and mouths!
New York chain Momofuku made its way to Toronto and opened its giant 4 in 1 complex back in 2012. Life With Coco*a and I were happy to try out their Noodle Bar one evening while we planned our epic European adventures.
If your party is small enough, sit at the bar. I love being able to see the magic happen, and the Noodle bar has an open kitchen.
We started our meal with Okonomiyaki – a dish I’ve never had before but closely resembling a potato pancake with toppings.
Here they use Japanese yam, katsuobushi (dried tuna) and mayo. Next up our bowls of ramen came to the table. Co*a went with the momofuku ramen.
A smorgasbord of flavours all in one convenient bowl! She loved that it was true pork belly and not just the ground pork that you get in other ramen establishments. Most importantly, the noodles came out at the right temperature for eating, no need to wait to start slurping!
I decided the little clams were going to hit the spot. I loved every bite – the noodles were perfectly al dente. The clams were just adorable, I mean look at them!
Be warned, this dish was spicy (a perfect throat and nose clearer for those of us that are a little under the weather).
Next up we ordered the Char Siu Burgers…
… and couldn’t resist having a little fun with our food.
While they were fun to play with, this dish was a miss for us. It really just tasted like a burger wrapped in bao. We were hoping for some asian fusion flavours in the meat, but it was a straight up burger. A little underwhelming considering all the other dishes we had already consumed.
What? You ordered MORE? Yes, we did and thank God! Otherwise we would have missed out on the Sriacha Chicken Wings.
I didn’t think that they were THAT spicy, but my taste buds may have gotten used to the heat of my little clams dish. Co*a thought that they were definitely on the spicy side, so super tasters, be warned! They were a good meld of sweet and heat and lifted our spirits from the disappointment of the char siu burgers
Lastly, we couldn’t resist splitting some ice cream (it is summer after all!) So we followed with soft serve cereal milk ice cream
Cereal Milk is just what you imagine it to be, the sweet milky goodness left after a bowl of sugary cereal. Infused in ice cream? Two thumbs waaaay up!
If you want to bring some Momofuku goodies home, stop by the Milk Bar (a giant glass refrigerator) with all their baked treats and handy baskets:
Our favourite thing from the fridge? Crack Pie – I’m pretty sure it’s named after the drug because I was jonesing for more after one bite! So if you haven’t already, why not jump in and join the Ramen love. After all … winter is coming (damnit.)
