Kate was our chosen host for October’s RDN and I was excited to see where she would take us next. Having been one of the original 4 people at the very FIRST Random Dinner Night back in 2006, Kate has impressed with her restaurant choices time and time again… so where the heck would she take us next?
We met up with her on the edge of the Distillery district and she led us for a short walk down Tank House Lane to El Catrin Destileria.
This massive restaurant is beautiful with drama infused vaulted ceilings, a gorgeous mural painted in black light by Oscar Flores and even some dioramas.
The food comes tapas style so I partnered up with my friend Chris so that we could tag team our choices. We always seem to choose similar dishes at RDN and we always come with the big appetite. Lucky for us, El Catrin has a very big menu! We started off with the Ensalada de Langosta Mexicana.
A fennel salad tossed with cilantro, mint and red onion. The jicama and orange adds a fresh citrus taste to the lobster and guajillo chili adds a mild kick. Served tossed in mezcal dressing.
Next up Vuelve a la Vida El Catrin:
A beautiful cerviche with oyster, shrimp, octopus and bay scallops dressed with onion, cucumber, jicama and Acapulco cocktail sauce. Served on the half shell.
We continued choosing one of El Catrin’s Tostada selection:
Tostada con Higado de Pato is seared foie gras, with house made tostada, mezcal mango
syrup, poblano chili pepper and red onion relish
Lastly, we tried Burrito de Mariscos. Officially, El Catrin makes the cutest burritos!
Because we hadn’t gotten enough seafood at this point (haha) we were glad that this one was filled shrimp, octopus, swordfish!
Did I say lastly? Yes, El Catrin also has a pretty epic dessert menu. We went for the dessert sampler. I can never pass up all time favourite Central/South American dessert Tres Leches! And while it was very good, the most memorable thing in the sampler was the Mexican Chocolate Bar:
HELLO, double smoked spiced hazelnut chocolate bar! The hint of chilies catches you right on the dark chocolate finish. DELISH!!
Well, suffice it to say, we’ll be back to this lovely restaurant! Thank you Kate for a fabulous find and we can’t wait for Paul’ choice for November!
